Liverpool legend John Barnes has called for patience and lower expectations from Reds fans next season because the club cannot rival their Premier League rivals in the market for world class players. Brendan Rodgers’ side slumped to a disappointing sixth place this campaign, duly missing out on Champions League football next term, after coming within touching distance of the title the season before. The Reds have begun rebuilding for next year with the signings of James Milner and Danny Ings in the last week, and Barnes has advised the Anfield faithful to be realistic in terms of expectations and recruitment. “It’s going to take time. Steven Gerrard is not there, Luis Suarez is not there and Daniel Sturridge may be injured. Fans are going to have to be patient,” the ex-England winger told Drivetime. “The expectation levels will have to drop. It’s not so much who they need, it’s what they can get. They aren’t going to be able to go out and get a [Karim] Benzema.” Liverpool spent over £120m on players last summer after the sale of Suarez to Barcelona, with very few recruits making the desired impact on the club’s first team in the 2014/2015 season. Deals for Milner and Ings, after the duo’s contracts expired at Manchester City and Burnley respectively, have been regarded as safe signings, and Barnes feels the club have to be less risky after previous misjudgements in the transfer market. The 51-year-old said: “They can’t take a gamble any more. They can’t get the best in the world. "Liverpool can’t compete with Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United from a salary perspective so they are going to have to maybe find another [Philippe] Coutinho.” On the Reds’ deal for Ings, which was announced earlier on Monday, Barnes feels the 21-year-old will strengthen the Liverpool squad and add a more aggressive dynamic up front. “It’s a good signing for the squad. He’s a proven striker in Premier League. He’s aggressive which I think is what Liverpool lacked,” Barnes added.
