Danny Wilson could captain Rangers one day, says assistant manager David Weir

Rangers assistant manager David Weir has described Danny Wilson as a future captain. Wilson, who started his career at Ibrox in 2008, was the Hearts skipper last term as he led them to the Scottish Championship title He ended his stay at Tynecastle when his contract expired last month and has signed a three-year contract with Rangers. The 45-year-old, who played alongside Wilson when the centre-back first broke into the Ibrox team as a teenager, told RangersTV: "I think you forget how young he was when he was playing here the first time and obviously he's gone down south and had various clubs there. "He played for Liverpool and he was out on loan at Bristol (City) and a couple of other places. So he's learned a lot and he's matured a lot. "Meeting him in the last few days again you can see he's grown up and he's developed physically and mentally so he's a different lad to what he was, although he's still got a lot of the same characteristics. He's a nice person, which helps as well. "As I said he does tick a lot of the boxes and that being another one as well, the fact he is vocal, he is a leader and he's a potential captain. "He's one of those types that are few and far between so that's another added bonus with getting Danny here. "He's got the attributes to come in and be the right type of person, set the tone for everyone else and be a part of what we want to do here."

No Hate, Just Indifference Towards WWC In case we didn't already know, the Mailbox suggests the Women's World Cup isn't

But the thing is, I just don't care. As I say, I support Aston Villa, and if taking part in football as a spectator were based solely on logic, there is no way on God's green f***ing earth I'd spend my time and money watching that shower on a regular basis. But unfortunately, at some point in my life, my brain decided I was going to care, and care deeply, about whether or not a group of millionaires playing in claret and blue shirts in north Birmingham on a Saturday afternoon win a game invented by children. Hey ho. See also: England [m]. This has never happened with women's football. I'd never even seen a game played by women until I was about 20, and while I can appreciate it as a sport, I just don't give a monkey's about what happens; similar to when I'm watching golf, tennis, boxing, WWE, bowls, any sport I didn't take an interest in as a kid really. And so the WWC is passing me by. Is this because I'm a misogynist? Am I a prat, as Nick Miller suggests? I don't think so. Don't get me wrong, normally I'd eat my own fingers before being on the same side of a debate as Martin Samuel, Rod Liddle, etc. But I dislike the implication that if I don't make myself watch something I'm not interested in, this means there's something wrong with me. Neil Raines Bit of a sweeping generalisation on your website to say that anyone who hates the Women's World Cup must be "a prat". It's football on the same level as Scottish football, which everyone also hates. Are they prats? No, they are people who watch great football all year round and then are expected to like this dross, or they must be a prat. I'd rather go out in the sun than stay in and be served this slice of shite. I remember when the world wasn't full of social justice warriors and actually just reasonable people. Your own website even said once that there are "people waiting on the internet to be angered by anything". Which is what you're doing here so well done.

Football People on TV: Matt Smith

John Nicholson and Alan Tyers wipe away their tears, wave goodbye to ITV's coverage of football as the tactics truck of destiny is finally crushed in the knacker's yard of existence. But I tell you what, Clive, they'll really miss that Matt Smith. Fashion Police Soft tailoring from the 'a touch more sensitive' range. Nicer than Blue Harbour but not overly concerned with fashionability and nor an expression of brutal masculinity. Doesn't favour the standard presenter's undertaker look of black jacket and tie, white shirt. Never afraid to sport pink or a strong mid blue. We sense he'd be very at home in a cashmere roll-neck in a mid grey. Does not own slacks. Has lovely eyes and a habit of raising an eyebrow which suggests hotter fires burn under his cool exterior. Wears one of those unremarkable hair cuts that nonetheless looks expensive and is certainly not done in the kitchen by their missus, which is our favoured tonsorial option. Now into his 40s, a greying barnet has only increased his charm. Lingo Bingo A native of Liverpool, although you'd never really know. His vaguely north-west accent is just enough to give him a bit of character but not powerful enough to brand him as a Designated Northerner. Specialises in relaxed, somewhat amused presentation. Seems almost totally unfazed by the gig and has developed chattiness as his go-to mode of communication. Hits & Misses His biggest miss was that being, for a while and in our view criminally, the fourth choice behind Adrian Chiles, Gabby Logan and, even more amazingly, Jim Rosenthal. As one by one, those people left, he must have felt that his big gig was coming, only to then be usurped by Mark Pougatch. A perfectly decent cove, the Pougers, but what's wrong with Matt? For years he's been ITV hidden gem, tucked away on ITV94 covering Europa League games from Albania (which is, of course, why we love him) His biggest achievement is to be a really professional presenter but without it seeming like a torture or encouraging an overbearing personality. Whilst Adrian would struggle with the talking up to the break bits, Matt always does that like a pro. He must have looked upon his competitors and wondered why they were above him when, to be frank, he had much better chops. Such is life. The bestselling records are often not the best music. Big Club Bias Although a Liverpool fan, it never came through. Years of Europa League work at the dusty end of the dial sandwiched between repeats of early 90s Poirot and documentaries about drunk people from Barnsley on holiday in Ibiza knock the ego and elitist-fuelled grandiosity of the big club bias out of a man. When you've covered Stoke City on a wet Thursday night, it's a sobering reminder of the mortality of all flesh and that the Big Time ain't so big after all. Loved Or Loathed We would speculate that anyone loathing Matt Smith has no joy for existence. If we may use a poetry analogy, he's more Roger McGough than Allen Ginsberg, but then we don't always want to see an angel-headed hipster presenting obscure European games. There's a homespun plainness to Matt that gives us a sense of fuzzy warm calm that not even having Gus Poyet as a pundit can disturb. Proper Football Man Well he's presenting on ITV, which is the sort of thing a PFM would do, whilst gently simmering that perfumed brown-nosers were getting all the good gigs. But we don't think Matt is a PFM at all despite mixing with those who clearly are. He's the sort of chap who has to encourage and indulge the PFM in banter antics, but will never be found inside a skip of waste food with grotesquely stained trousers around the back of a Kentucky Fried Chicken shop in Urlam after one too many pink paraffin and boot polish liveners with Reidy and the boys. Equally, we doubt he will ever be snapped with Miss Ramsbottom 1986 coming out of a lap dancing club called Beavers. He's just too respectable and nice for that. Also he's a Modern Languages and Political Studies graduate, which is just far too much education to even get you a day pass to PFM land. The real PFMs know he's not one of their own. Maybe this explains why he's always fallen short of a big promotion over the years.

Brown defends Messi selfie

Messi is used to being sought after by fans, celebrities and even fellow professionals but he was still caught by surprise when Brown asked for a selfie following Argentina's 1-0 Copa America win. Argentina won Group B with Saturday's victory, their second at the tournament in Chile, and were waiting on Sunday to find out who they would face in the last eight after the final round of Group C matches. Striker Brown, who had been substituted near the end of the match at Vina del Mar, picked up his mobile phone as soon as the final whistle went and ran onto the pitch to find Messi. "I had thought about it before the match so that's why I took (the phone) to the bench. As soon as (the match) finished, I took the picture," Brown said. "Messi is the best in the world, a star, and that's a photo I'll have as a souvenir all my life." Argentina's captain laughed as he recalled what had happened. "He surprised me. On top of that I was annoyed about how the match had gone despite our win ... but when I saw the phone I realised what was going on. It's really nice when a colleague asks me for that," Messi said. Argentina were all over Jamaica in the first half and should have had more than Gonzalo Higuain's early goal. They hit the bar twice before losing the initiative alarmingly in the final quarter of the match. They managed to defend their lead and avoid what happened in their opening match when they gave away a two-goal lead to Paraguay who scored twice in the last half hour for a 2-2 draw. "In the first half we created lots of chances, we found the spaces but couldn't score another goal," said Messi, who was making his 100th appearance for Argentina. "It got tougher for us in the second half, the rhythm dropped and we played much more slowly, that's a fact... I don't know if it's a physical issue, I don't know why it happened to us." Messi said Argentina would have to improve for the knockout phase if they want to win their first major title since the 1993 Copa America in Ecuador. "That was our objective, to finish first (in the group) and think about what's to come. Another Copa starts now," Messi added.

Football365's Top Ten Summer Needs

Everton - Satisfactory reserve options There's a good deal to like about Everton's first-choice XI. Leighton Baines, James McCarthy, Seamus Coleman, John Stones, Phil Jagielka, Muhamed Besic and Romelu Lukaku may all merit starts at neighbours Liverpool, for example. What lets Roberto Martinez down is the bare cupboard left once the finest ingredients are removed. Tony Hibbert as the reserve right-back, Aroune Kone as the back-up for Lukaku and Antonin Alcaraz (now gone) in central defence - these are all things that require significant upgrade if Everton are going to improve. Last summer the majority of the transfer budget was spent on one striker, but this year Everton must spread their cash more thinly across the squad. The crucial trick is to do so without simply replacing mediocrity with mediocrity. Apropros of exactly that, Tom Cleverley has already arrived. 9) Newcastle United - Wingers Sammy Ameobi? No. Yoan Gouffran? No. Gabriel Obertan? No. Jonas Gutierrez? Gone. Sylvain Marveaux? No. Romain Amalfitano? No. Rolando Aarons? Yes, but still very raw. Any Newcastle supporter will give you a list as long as their arm for how Steve McClaren (and Mike Ashley) must improve this stagnant squad, but it is in wide areas that they are most lacking. Papis Cisse's chance conversion was remarkable last season, but both him and Ayoze Perez were forced to feed on relative scraps. As a rule, Newcastle's crossing and set-piece taking is at primary school level. With Siem de Jong, Remy Cabella and Moussa Sissoko all capable of creating behind the striker, signing a wide player (or two) would do much to lift the mood on Tyneside. Newcastle fans have a long history of adoring a winger (think Ruel Fox, David Ginola, Laurent Robert, Nobby Solano and Hatem Ben Arfa). All they want is someone to make them dream. 8) Promoted clubs - Defenders It is the one constant of the Premier League era. In every single season, the team that has conceded the most goals has been relegated. Sunderland and Aston Villa survived in May despite only scoring 31 times all season, compared to QPR's 42 (a total higher than six other teams). Letting them in at a rate of almost two a game is the perfect recipe for relegation.

Radamel Falcao: Can he succeed at Chelsea after Man Utd struggles?

With Chelsea agreeing a season-long loan deal to bring Monaco striker Radamel Falcao to Stamford Bridge, many will question the move following his difficult season at Manchester United. But Adam Bate argues that there is still hope for the Colombian forward… Falcao can expect derision. The main question occupying the minds of cynical football fans will be whether he’ll follow in the footsteps of fellow Manchester United cast-offs Juan Sebastian Veron and Mark Bosnich or emulate the struggles of Andriy Shevchenko and Fernando Torres in Chelsea blue. Staying off social media for a while might be good advice. Theories abound regarding why the goals stopped flowing for Falcao but comparisons with Marco van Basten once made as a compliment by his old River Plate boss Daniel Passarella have certainly taken an unfortunate turn. The Dutchman was done at 28. Falcao will turn 30 in February and some are ready to write him off – a busted flush with a busted knee. Chelsea appear to see it differently.

Frank Lampard is the best goal-scoring midfielder ever, says Jamie Redknapp

Frank Lampard will end his Premier League career as the best goal-scoring midfielder of all-time, says Jamie Redknapp. We’re going to lose two Premier League legends this weekend – and, after Steven Gerrard’s big Anfield send-off last Saturday, it’s only right Frank Lampard gets the plaudits he deserves ahead of his final game before moving to the MLS. It’s strange that match will come in the blue of Manchester City rather than the blue of Chelsea – his decision to play one final season for them after leaving Stamford Bridge last year surprised everybody. But, nonetheless, he’ll sign off as the best goal-scoring midfielder the Premier League has ever seen. COPA AMERICA - Today EcuadorvBolivia Ecuador8/15 Draw11/4 Bolivia6/1 EcuadorvBolivia Enner Valencia to Score and Ecuador to Win in 90 Mins9/4 Bet now In fact, he’s probably the best goal-scoring midfielder any league has ever seen. Frank Lampard looks back on his 20-year career in England as he nears the end of his Premier League adventure Frank Lampard looks back on his 20-year career in England as he nears the end of his Premier League adventure He scored 20 goals or more for Chelsea for five seasons in a row, is the club’s all-time leading scorer and, even this season, has the best goals-per-minute ratio of midfielders in the Premier League. In 15-20 years’ time, when we’re looking back on the history of the Premier League, we’ll talk about his goal-scoring and say ‘wow’. He’s unique. There’s no midfielder who has ever had an eye for goal like him. It used to drive me mad playing against him – I’d think ‘I’ve got him’ and then he’d suddenly dart into the box and score. It’s a talent and a gift he’s been given.

How did Liverpool signings perform this term? Phil Thompson rates them

Liverpool spent nearly £100m last summer on signings, but how did they get on in their first season at Anfield? Phil Thompson takes a look and gives them all a rating out of 10. The Reds brought in eight new players on permanent deals after narrowly missing out on the Premier League title in 2013/14. But after a disappointing campaign that saw them finish sixth, did any of them impress Thompson and who has "underachieved greatly"? But I’d probably give him an eight – he’s done well, he’s had to play numerous positions and he just got on with it and adapted. "I think people forget how young he is too, and that maybe contributed to his bad end to the season, but he’s done really well overall.” Adam Lallana – 7 Adam Lallana: Season has been interrupted by injuries Adam Lallana: Season has been interrupted by injuries THOMMO SAYS: “I’m a great liker of Adam Lallana, so I’ll give him a seven. The problem Adam has was that every time he got a good run in the side he went and picked up an injury, so he’s been unfortunate in that sense. Roy Hodgson and England deserve credit for unbeaten 2014/15 season

Roy Hodgson was pleased with his team's resolve against Slovenia England have won all six of their European Qualifiers this season, including away victories against Switzerland, Estonia and Slovenia. Hodgson’s men did not shirk the challenge in their friendly fixtures either, remaining unbeaten in tricky away trips to Scotland, Italy and Ireland. The result is the longest sequence without defeat in almost two decades. Of course, there is only so much that can be achieved in non-tournament seasons and the lessons of the past will perhaps ensure that pessimism prevails. Rather than the usual proclamations that the world is about to succumb to Roy’s boys, quiet satisfaction ought to be the order of the day. The urge to dismiss England’s 100 per cent record must be resisted, however. It only requires a cursory glance at the results of others around the continent to appreciate the scale of that accomplishment. Spain, Germany and the Netherlands have lost games let alone drawn. England's unbeaten record under Roy Hodgson since the 2014 World Cup England's unbeaten record under Roy Hodgson since the 2014 World Cup Hodgson’s rebuilding job is rather more problematic than that of Europe’s heavyweights too. England cannot count upon the world-class centre-backs of the past decade, while the full-back areas appear problematic too. It’s an issue Hodgson is some way from resolving. But he deserves considerable credit for coming up with a midfield unit capable of getting the best from Jack Wilshere. The two-goal hero in Sunday’s 3-2 win over Slovenia has enjoyed the faith of his national team boss with Hodgson putting the Arsenal man at the heart of his plans. With unselfish and responsible figures such as Fabian Delph and Jordan Henderson doing the leg work around Wilshere, England’s most talented midfielder has been afforded the freedom to run with the ball from deep and play clever short passes into those ahead of him.

Anderson, Lampard, Froch and Wilkinson on Queen's Birthday Honours List

Anderson was on the periphery of the England team in 2005, having begun his international career two years earlier, but gets his decoration 10 years on, as he prepares for his sixth Ashes campaign. The 32-year-old said: "This means an enormous amount to me and my family. I'm very proud of my recent achievements, and this just caps it off. "These achievements wouldn't have been possible without the help and support of my family, friends and everyone at Burnley CC, Lancs CCC and England." Former Chelsea and Manchester City midfielder Lampard, who belatedly flew off to join New York City following his final game in the Premier League last month, collects an OBE for his services to football. He said: “I am delighted to receive this huge honour. I feel very fortunate to have had such a long and fulfilling career in football. This is an extremely proud moment for myself and my family.” Edwards, who gained a CBE in 2007, adds a knighthood for his services to sport and charitable services, while Davies, who captained the Welsh rugby union team and awarded an MBE in 1996, is recognised again with an OBE for his voluntary work for people with cancer. Wilkinson, who previously got an OBE, retired in 2014 after winning consecutive Heineken Cups with Toulon to add to his 2003 World Cup triumph with England and has now been made a CBE. He said: "I'm still getting used to it a little bit, it's amazing, I'm a very, very fortunate person. I've had an incredibly privileged lifestyle and I still stand around most of the time wondering how I'm getting away with it! "I've done what I love doing, I've been paid well, I've had support from everyone all round the place, I'm very fortunate and very honoured." Froch, who appears to be heading towards retirement not having boxed since his rematch win over George Groves nearly a year ago, gets an MBE for his services to boxing.

European Qualifiers: State of play for the Home Nations and Ireland

What’s happening next? England travel to Ljubljana to take on second-place Slovenia on Sunday and victory would move them nine points clear of their opponents with four games remaining. Given that San Marino are up next in September, England could be just 180 minutes away from confirming a top-two finish and their place at Euro 2016. So will they make it? Despite failing to impress in Dublin at the weekend, England are seen as near certainties to win Group E let alone qualify for the tournament. Sky Bet have them at 1/25 to win their group. NORTHERN IRELAND How have they done so far? Michael O’Neill’s team have surpassed all expectations thus far in winning four of their five qualifying games to sit second in Group F at the halfway stage. The team’s away form has been the revelation with Kyle Lafferty’s late winner in Hungary setting the tone before a 2-0 victory over 2004 winners Greece really ignited the nation’s hopes.

President Barack Obama calls on FIFA to operate with integrity

President Barack Obama said that it is important that Fifa is run with integrity and transparency. Barack Obama has spoken on the FIFA crisis for the first time, calling on the world football organisation to operate with integrity. Speaking at the Group of Seven economic summit in Krun, Germany, Obama would not comment on his Justice Department's investigation into the FIFA crisis but called on world football to be conducted in an upright manner. "I will say that in conversations I've had here, in Europe, people think it is very important for FIFA to be able to operate with integrity and transparency and accountability," Obama said. "The United States, by the way, since we keep on getting better and better at each World Cup, we want to make sure that a sport that is gaining popularity is conducted in an upright manner."

Aston Villa bidder granted has been granted exclusivity

The price is believed to be in the region of £150m and is being negotiated by Bank of America Merrill Lynch, who are the bank negotiating on behalf of owner Learner. Sky understand that that Smith's consortium is unlikely to have been granted exclusivity, so it appears to be a straight fight between the American group and the Chinese. Villa have effectively been up for sale for more than a year, with Lerner, the American tycoon who bought the club for just over £65m in 2006, keen to sell. Last year, Lerner appointed Bank of America Merrill Lynch to handle an auction of the club, and dozens of parties are said to have lodged an interest.

Exclusive - Liverpool legend calls for patience and lower expectations from Reds fans next season Read more at http://talksport.com/football/exclusive-liverpool-legend-calls-patience-and-lower-expectations-reds-fans-next-season#imvgVPk0pIdllTPV.99

Liverpool legend John Barnes has called for patience and lower expectations from Reds fans next season because the club cannot rival their Premier League rivals in the market for world class players. Brendan Rodgers’ side slumped to a disappointing sixth place this campaign, duly missing out on Champions League football next term, after coming within touching distance of the title the season before. The Reds have begun rebuilding for next year with the signings of James Milner and Danny Ings in the last week, and Barnes has advised the Anfield faithful to be realistic in terms of expectations and recruitment. “It’s going to take time. Steven Gerrard is not there, Luis Suarez is not there and Daniel Sturridge may be injured. Fans are going to have to be patient,” the ex-England winger told Drivetime. “The expectation levels will have to drop. It’s not so much who they need, it’s what they can get. They aren’t going to be able to go out and get a [Karim] Benzema.” Liverpool spent over £120m on players last summer after the sale of Suarez to Barcelona, with very few recruits making the desired impact on the club’s first team in the 2014/2015 season. Deals for Milner and Ings, after the duo’s contracts expired at Manchester City and Burnley respectively, have been regarded as safe signings, and Barnes feels the club have to be less risky after previous misjudgements in the transfer market. The 51-year-old said: “They can’t take a gamble any more. They can’t get the best in the world. "Liverpool can’t compete with Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United from a salary perspective so they are going to have to maybe find another [Philippe] Coutinho.” On the Reds’ deal for Ings, which was announced earlier on Monday, Barnes feels the 21-year-old will strengthen the Liverpool squad and add a more aggressive dynamic up front. “It’s a good signing for the squad. He’s a proven striker in Premier League. He’s aggressive which I think is what Liverpool lacked,” Barnes added.

Fifa crisis: Jack Warner 'to reveal all despite fears'

Former Fifa vice-president Jack Warner has said in a TV address that he will reveal all he knows about corruption at world football's governing body. Mr Warner, who said he feared for his life, also said he could link Fifa officials to general elections in his native Trinidad and Tobago in 2010. He is one of the 14 people charged by the US over alleged corruption at Fifa. Another top Fifa official and key witness, American Chuck Blazer, has admitted accepting bribes. The admissions came in a newly released transcript of Mr Blazer's guilty plea from 2013, as part of a wide-ranging US criminal case that has engulfed Fifa and led president Sepp Blatter to resign. The US justice department alleges the 14 people charged worldwide accepted bribes and kickbacks estimated at more than $150m (£97m) over a 24-year period. Four others have already been charged, including Mr Blazer. line Jack Warner: The US charge sheet Accused of racketeering, wire fraud, money laundering, bribery From the early 1990s, he allegedly "began to leverage his influence and exploit his official positions for personal gain" Allegedly accepted a $10m bribe from South African officials in return for voting to award them the 2010 World Cup Allegedly bribed officials with envelopes each containing $40,000 in cash; when one demurred, he allegedly said: "There are some people here who think they are more pious than thou. If you're pious, open a church, friends. Our business is our business" line Mr Warner, 72, resigned from all football activity in 2011 amid bribery allegations and later stepped down as Trinidad and Tobago's security minister amid a fraud inquiry. A key figure in the deepening scandal, he said he had given lawyers documents outlining the links between Fifa, its funding, himself and the 2010 election in Trinidad and Tobago. He said the transactions also included Mr Blatter. "I will no longer keep secrets for them who actively seek to destroy the country," he said in an address on Trinidadian TV on Wednesday evening entitled "The gloves are off". Speaking to his supporters at a rally later the same day, he promised an "avalanche" of revelations to come.

Watford set to appoint Flores

Newly-promoted Watford are to confirm the appointment of former Atletico Madrid boss Quique Sanchez Flores as their new manager later on Friday. The Hornets had been in talks to extend the contract of Slavisa Jokanovic, who had guided the club into the Premier League. However, after those negotiations broke down over the Serb's salary demands, Watford moved to secure the services of Sanchez Flores. The 50-year-old Spaniard won La Liga with Real Madrid as a player in 1994-95. Share Share this post on Twitter Facebook Read more about these links.
