Premier League weekend grades: Nigel Winterburn gives his verdict

Tottenham B With Tottenham being the home team against a Liverpool team that are expected to beat, I think I'd grade Spurs with a B. I thought it was a solid performance by them. Liverpool B+ From where Liverpool have been, people expected a reaction following Jurgen Klopp's appointment as manager - and they got it. It was pretty even at White Hart Lane though, with not much to separate the sides. Jurgen Klopp was held to a goalless draw in his first game as Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was held to a goalless draw in his first game as Liverpool manager Chelsea B- Chelsea have lost their way this season so far but still managed to get the win. They are not 100 percent convincing yet from where they were last season, but it was certainly an improvement, they needed the victory. They are searching for their best form but confidence is a key thing and that result will help. Aston Villa C+cr7specialedition

Villa are really struggling but the performance was positive, despite the fact they lost. It was a difficult game for them and they need results quickly. Crystal Palace C I thought aspects of the game were good for Palace but losing at home has affected my grade. Losing any player in a Premier League game is significantly going to hamper your chances and usually hands the initiative to your opponent, and it proved that way. Dwight Gayle's dismissal swung the game in West ham's favour Dwight Gayle's dismissal swung the game in West ham's favour West Ham A- I was very impressed by West Ham. Their away form has been sensational and Palace are a strong, energetic team at home. They made some good tactical substitutions when it looked as though they weren't going to make the breakthrough. The sending off did affect the game but so did the changes late on. Everton C- Everton have been playing really well this season but they were completely flat on Saturday. Obviously, the circumstances surrounding the game wouldn't have helped them but they needed to be professional and it was just a flat performance. Perhaps coming off an international break affected them as well.

Ex-Spurs defender Ramon Vega keen on FIFA president's role

Ramon Vega pictured at the recent Soccerex gathering in Manchester Former Tottenham defender Ramon Vega looks set to declare his candidacy to replace Sepp Blatter as president of FIFA. Vega, whose other teams included Celtic and Watford, is expected to officially announce his intention to head the organisation by the end of the week. Vega on Platini "There are people who have an interest in getting this sorted out in a manner where tranquility and stability can follow. "You need a nuclear scenario, a clean break from the past." Vega clearly believes this does not involve Platini who could be barred from running for the FIFA presidency depending on the exact length of his suspension. Vega added: "The block that has been happening through the Platini scenario has not allowed a debate to develop. "He needs to stand back, put his hands up and concentrate on retaining the UEFA job. "At the moment the governing body of UEFA has the potential to put forward a good candidate and it is being blocked through loyalty to Platini. "There is nothing wrong with loyalty but it has to go hand in hand with common sense."

How England’s players rated v Lithuania

JACK BUTLAND: Having played as a goalkeeper in matches my team was dominating, I can guarantee that Butland was a) daydreaming about his tea and b) hoping Lithuania broke through at least once. So he will have been pleased to warm his gloves with a save to deny Lukas Spalvis. First competitive start; first competitive clean sheet. KYLE WALKER: His first competitive start in two years and he did little to suggest that his next competitive start will come along any quicker. If only his brain was as quick as his legs – showing too much of the ball to the opposition is like a nervous tic he just can’t stop. Struggled to make an impact creatively when both Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Adam Lallana were trying to operate in the same space, but his weighted pass for the former’s goal was a rare moment of true quality. PHIL JONES: It was his fifth start for England in 12 months – in three different positions. Which just about sums up Jones’ injury problems, his versatility and Roy Hodgson’s determination to shoehorn him in somewhere. Barely tested defensively and found the space to meander forward on occasion against Lithuania – not sure we would want him to be doing that from centre-half against better opposition. Actually, we are very sure we would not.

PHIL JAGIELKA: Just when we thought Jagielka was being eased out of the England set-up, he finds some excellent club form and looks assured for country. Showed poise, leadership and an excellent range of passing in Vilnius. Can you tell I made absolutely no notes on Jagielka during 90 minutes? KIERAN GIBBS: England’s third left-back of the season is probably fourth choice if you throw Leighton Baines into the mix; he should probably be fifth choice behind Aaron Cresswell. Has barely played for Arsenal this season and it shows – he looks hesitant and limited. End of Season discount soccer shoes , please click

JONJO SHELVEY: Touched the ball more than anybody else on the pitch and yet it’s difficult to remember a really positive contribution. The surface really did not suit his love of a raking ball and with his natural game already curbed by playing deeper, this was not a match to showcase the best of Shelvey. Hodgson persists with the idea of pushing a box-to-box midfielder (Wilshere, Milner, Shelvey) into a deeper position, but should we be looking instead at a natural spoiler? Eric Dier and Jack Cork are names that spring to mind. ROSS BARKLEY: There are those who took Matt Stead’s piece on Ross Barkley this week as unfair criticism of a talented young player, but the criticism was aimed at a media that is so desperate for the next Paul Gascoigne/Wayne Rooney that they have anointed Barkley long before he has put together a consistently excellent three months, never mind a whole season. Barkley was again impressive against Lithuania, his quick feet finding something in common with the surface, and his goal – though deflected – was just reward for his ability to find space and shoot with either foot from the edge of the box. Now we want to see it against opposition that does not fall for every feint and shoulder-drop.

Having arrived at Chelsea from Valencia in 2011, Mata spent three years living in London before making the move to Manchester. Despite enjoying his time in the capital, the midfielder feels more at home in the "laid back" city of Manchester. "It only seems like yesterday when I was in Valencia. I'm really happy with how it's all turned out," he added. "London is fantastic - it's like various cities in one but it moves so quickly - at a thousand miles an hour, it's a bit crazy. Manchester is more laid back, it's a normal city. "I am very happy in Manchester. I have the feeling that I have only just arrived and I've got a lot of things I want to do."

Chris Coleman: No request from Real Madrid to rest Gareth Bale against Andorra

Chris Coleman has denied reports that suggest Real Madrid have asked Wales to rest Gareth Bale against Andorra on Tuesday. Wales have already confirmed their qualification for Euro 2016 and Madrid were rumoured to be upset at Bale's inclusion in the squad for the final Group B fixture. "But we need to make changes - about staff and how we run the structure - because we need to keep pushing forward even though we've qualified. "You can never be in a position where you feel comfortable because once that happens you never keep achieving. "So it's up to me to rattle a few cages and say 'okay, we've done that, but to get there we need to change certain things'. "That plan may backfire, but if you want to be original you've got to be prepared to take criticism and do something you really believe in." Chris Coleman guided Wales to Euro 2016 qualification, their first major tournament in over 50 years. Chris Coleman admits he may have to "rattle a few cages" in Welsh football in order to improve the fortunes of the national side. The former Fulham manager insists administrative changes need to be made by the Welsh FA if the country is to remain competitive in international football. Coleman successfully guided Wales to Euro 2016 qualification on Saturday - the country's first major tournament since the 1958 World Cup in Sweden.

Newcastle manager Steve McClaren praised the attitude of his team against Chelsea

End of Season discount soccer shoes , please clickSteve McClaren was very pleased with Newcastle's performance against Chelsea, even though the result wasn't what they wanted Steve McClaren praised the attitude of his Newcastle team after their 2-2 draw with Chelsea at St James' Park. The result means McClaren and Newcastle are still without a league win this season and are currently sitting second from bottom of the table. Having led 2-0 it looked like that winless run was coming to an end, but despite Chelsea's comeback the Newcastle boss was full of praise for his side.In the end the result is a disappointment but the way we played and the way we responded after this week was excellent. "We said to the players: 'End the week well with a performance and show what you can do.' We did that and to a man their attitude was magnificent." The former England manager also dismissed talk of a crisis at the club and believes the return of summer signing Aleksandar Mitrovic from suspension can be a real boost for Newcastle.People tend to overreact. People forget we've missed Mitrovic for three matches," added McClaren. "We didn't have a centre forward because Papiss Cisse was injured and Ivan Toney is still a young boy. You need that target man to play off and we've not really had that. "We've tried to play through but it's not been successful whereas today we had a target. Mitrovic was a constant thorn in the side of Chelsea's back four."

Newcastle 2-2 Chelsea: Jamie Redknapp believes lack of striking options is costing Blues

End of Season discount soccer shoes , please clickJamie Redknapp believes Chelsea's inability to add another striker to the squad in the summer is costing them after their 2-2 draw at Newcastle. Late goals from substitutes Ramires and Willian denied the Magpies their first win of the season, with the hosts having been two goals in front in the Saturday Night Football encounter. However, once again, the Premier League champions looked out of sorts in the north east, and slipped further behind in the title race. They've missed a real trick not buying a centre-forward that can do that job that Costa does because everybody knows, he's going to get banned again before the end of the season. Jamie Redknapp Jose Mourinho's men looked toothless without Diego Costa to lead the line and with Loic Remy and substitute Radamel Falcao struggling to make an impact, Redknapp believes the Chelsea boss must take some of the blame for not recognising the need for alternatives to Costa in the summer. "If you're going to miss a player that much, you need to have something to come in and do the job that he does," Redknapp said. So I think that Jose Mourinho has to accept responsibility for not bringing in someone who can do that job. "I think the decision to sign Falcao, as much as Falcao was an unbelievable player a couple of years ago, you can see he's not at that level anymore. "So I think he [Mourinho] has to take responsibility. He was so insistent on getting a defender through the door, they've missed a real trick not buying a centre-forward that can do that job that Costa does because the way he plays football you're sometimes going to have to do without him."

Merson's predictions: Easy wins for Chelsea, Man Utd and Man City

Soccer Saturday pundit Paul Merson returns with another round of predictions ahead of this weekend's Premier League action. Manchester City lost their 100 per cent record at home to West Ham last weekend, but Merse sees them rebounding with a win at White Hart Lane following Spurs' north London derby defeat in midweek. The Magic Man also believes Arsenal will break Leicester's unbeaten Premier League record at the King Power Stadium on Saturday, and predicts a much-needed win for Liverpool at home to his former club Villa. Chelsea are a banker. Newcastle can't stop losing. I like Steve McClaren, but they are just struggling so badly. The fans are rightly frustrated and Saturday could turn nervy within 10 minutes at St James' Park. Jose Mourinho's side love that and he'll pick them off easily. The lead at the top is eight points, but Chelsea can win the title. After last week especially. It was a huge day for Chelsea last week, to beat Arsenal and then see City lose at home to West Ham. You have to remember Chelsea will look to beat Man City at home in April, so I call it five points.

Premier League Doctors' Group demands changes in wake of Eva Carneiro case

The Premier League Doctors' Group says safeguards are needed for team doctors treating players following Eva Carneiro's case at Chelsea. Can Jack Grealish step up for Aston Villa after his breakthrough last season?

Jack Grealish has the talent, but can he lift Aston Villa out of their malaise? Nick Wright takes a look at the challenge facing the 20-year-old after his breakthrough last season... Tim Sherwood had a clear message for Jack Grealish after he scored his first goal for Aston Villa in their 3-2 defeat to Leicester City. "I've been encouraging him to try and affect the football match," said the Villa manager. "We all know he looks good, he's got great guile and poise. But he needs to start affecting it by scoring goals and delivering assists." Grealish celebrated that sumptuous finish against Leicester by jumping into his manager's arms, but such jubilant scenes have been few and far between for Villa this season. Four defeats in their last five Premier League games have left them hovering above the drop zone, and Tuesday's Capital One Cup third round clash with arch-rivals Birmingham City has taken on even greater significance after their 1-0 loss to West Brom. Villa are still finding their feet after a summer of upheaval in the transfer market. Fabian Delph and Christian Benteke headed a long list of departures from Villa Park, and spending exceeded £50m as Sherwood re-shaped his squad with 13 new signings. But while the new faces get acquainted with the Premier League, the departures of Delph and Benteke have left academy graduate Grealish with more responsibility.

Former FIFA vice-president Jack Warner faces extradition to the USA

Warner has denied allegations of accepting millions of dollars in bribes and has been fighting the extradition attempt. However, Trinidad and Tobago's attorney general has now approved the proceedings. The 72-year-old is also at the centre of one of the key elements in the indictment - a $10m payment from South African football officials to CONCACAF. Prosecutors in the United States have alleged the payment was linked to Warner's support for South Africa's bid to host the 2010 World Cup. Lawyers for Warner asked Deputy Chief Magistrate Mark Wellington to discharge their client because Attorney General Faris Al Rawi missed a September 16 deadline for signing the Authority to Proceed documents. Queens Counsel James Lewis, representing the state has claimed there was no reason to discharge Warner since the documents were now signed. Wellington asked for time to review the documents and the arguments from lawyers representing the state.

Nottingham Forest 1-2 Middlesbrough: Boro keep winning thanks to 'keeper

But, while Konstantopoulos denied both Eric Lichaj and Ryan Mendes twice with a quartet of saves, Dorus de Vries was beaten when a defensive slip allowed Daniel Ayala to ghost in to score in the 32nd minute. The match got off to a flying start, with Albert Adomah already having come close to a goal by the time Middlesbrough took a third-minute lead. George Friend had advanced down the left flank to deliver a driven, low cross into the centre, where Nugent found the space to prod home. Middlesbrough goalkeeper Dimitrios Konstantopoulos produced a fine performance Middlesbrough goalkeeper Dimitrios Konstantopoulos produced a fine performance When Nelson Oliveira's shot was deflected wide, Forest took advantage of the resulting corner, with Lansbury's delivery picking out Mills, who powered home a volley, high into the back of the net, from six yards out, four minutes later. It was 'keeper De Vries who was the key figure for Forest however, as he twice made saves that denied Middlesbrough the lead for a second time. A quick break saw Stewart Downing surge clear, only for the big Dutchman to thwart him by spreading himself and getting a foot to his low shot. Nugent forced De Vries into another save with a powerful, driven strike before the Forest stopper regained his feet to save again, after Adomah had pounced on the rebound. The visitors did force their way ahead again however. When Grant Leadbitter drove in a cross, Kelvin Wilson only managed to head the ball back towards his own goal, with Ayala reacting quickest to beat De Vries to the ball and head home from a few yards out.

Tim Sherwood credits West Brom after they beat his Villa side

Aston Villa manager Tim Sherwood agreed that his side were second best after watching them lose 1-0 at home to local rivals West Brom. However, Sherwood thinks his side have generally been playing well this season and that it is too early in the campaign to worry too much. Villa struggled to create chances throughout against the well-organised visitors and Saido Berahino struck just before the break to leave them chasing the game. And Sherwood paid tribute to the Baggies, who are proving hard to break down away from home this season. Asked what his feelings were after the match, Sherwood said: "Disappointment that we didn't perform. I think West Brom deserved the result. They came and did a good job on us. "We did not express ourselves enough on them. I thought we were a little better in the second period, we had a few more balls into the box. "I need to watch it back and there are obviously some problems from this game but our performances over this period of the season have been encouraging, we just have not got enough points. Saido Berahino diverted a shot past Brad Guzan to win the game for West Brom

Champions League: Who makes our team of the week?

After the first round of games in the European football's biggest competition, Paris St-Germain take pride of place with four players in our Champions League team of the week. Former Manchester United and Real Madrid winger Angel Di Maria is among them after scoring his first goal for the French champions in their 2-0 win over Malmo in Group A on Tuesday night. Only one of the four Premier League sides managed to get a player selected after a disappointing opening round which saw Chelsea emerge as the sole winners thanks to their 4-0 victory over Maccabi Tel Aviv. Blues' midfielder Cesc Fabregas gets the nod after scoring one and creating another goal for Diego Costa in the Group G win on Wednesday evening. The Champions League Team of the Week is supplied by Opta and is based on more than 250 calculations GOALKEEPER - Johan Wiland (Malmo) Johan Wiland, Malmo Johan Wiland made eight saves; two more than any other goalkeeper on Tuesday evening Malmo's goalkeeper had a busy night in the French capital, with the hosts having 22 shots compared to Malmo's six. The 2-0 scoreline to PSG might have been a lot worse without 34-year-old Sweden stopper Wiland.

Dyer wants regular starts for Swansea

The winger has been doing overtime to get a place in Garry Monk's starting XI and has no intention of slowing down after opening the scoring in the 3-0 Capital One Cup victory over York City on Tuesday. "I've been working really hard throughout pre-season to get back into the first team," said Dyer. "I have been working closely with (coach) James Beattie, so it was great to get on the scoresheet. Swansea have been drawn against Hull City in Round Three of the League Cup and Dyer knows it is an opportunity to shine. "I just want to prove I can get back to my best and push for a start," he said. End of Season discount soccer shoes , please click

Swansea's Jonjo Shelvey hoping for successful Premier League season ahead

“Chicken and broccoli. That’s all I will eat. I do need to try other food. My missus is always on at me to try other things. She gets fed up with cooking me chicken and broccoli.” This insight into the culinary habits of a particular Premier League footballer was quite revealing. Swansea City’s Jonjo Shelvey is going to enterprising lengths to improve his career and, if successful, it’s something that may catch on. The 23 year old has decided to hire a chef to cook for him at home, morning, noon and night. He’s never been a naturally careful eater, which is why he could only really come up with chicken and broccoli when I asked him what healthy foods he likes. “My agent is interviewing a few chefs at the moment,” he explained. “I sat down with the manager, the chairman, my agent and my Dad before I signed the new contract and we spoke about getting a chef in. We felt the main area of my game that needed improving was my fitness and that stems from what you eat. I’m hoping we’ll have one in very soon and it will be interesting to see how it goes. I’m looking forward to trying it out.” End of Season discount soccer shoes , please click

Premier League 2015-16: Who will finish where?

The phoney wars of pre-season friendlies and the Community Shield are over and the real business of the Premier League begins this weekend. So it is once again time to dust off the crystal ball and take a guess on how the top flight will unfold over the next nine months. Can Jose Mourinho and Chelsea's grip on the crown be released? Can Arsenal finally turn promise into a Premier League title? Can Brendan Rodgers rebuild Liverpool from the wreckage of that 6-1 humiliation at Stoke City on the final day of last season? The safety net is, of course, that clubs still have plenty of time to alter the odds by making a landmark signing before the window closes, but here goes... Transfers up to date as of 20:00 BST on 5 August.End of Season discount soccer shoes , please click

West Brom manager Tony Pulis praises Saido Berahino

West Brom manager Tony Pulis has complimented the way striker Saido Berahino has handled himself following renewed speculation linking him with a move away from The Hawthorns. Tottenham have been repeatedly linked with the England U21 international and reports this week claim the Londoners are preparing a bid of between £10m and £15m. But speaking after the Baggies’ 2-1 friendly win over Walsall at the Banks’ Stadium on Tuesday night, Pulis was keen to play down suggestions Berahino could be on his way out of the club. 1ST GOALSCORER - 30th Jul Real MvAC Milan Cristiano Ronaldo11/4 Karim Benzema4/1 Gareth Bale11/2 CORRECT SCORE - 30th Jul Real MvAC Milan 2-17/11-216/12-015/20-118/11-08/10-233/1 Bet nowBet £5 get £20 free “Saido is okay, there is always going to be speculation during the window,” Pulis told SSNHQ. “He is a very, very good player and he is English and those players, as you have seen with (Raheem) Sterling and people like that, they are wanted players. “The great thing about it is that I think we have got him in a position where he knows what to do and how to cope with things. Tony Pulis says Saido Berahino knows how to deal with the transfer speculation surrounding him. “He’s handled himself very well during the last couple of weeks and tonight in the game. He has shown great attitude and I think it was appreciated by all the West Bromwich Albion supporters.” West Brom earlier on Tuesday posted a quirky message on their Twitter feed, stating: "OK, this is getting silly now. So let us make it clear. There has been NO bid for Saido. That's it. Carry on everyone." Berahino scored 14 times in the Premier League last season and earned a call-up to Roy Hodgson’s England squad, although he is yet to play for the full national side.

Wijnaldum Just The Beginning For Newcastle

"I will continue the policy of investing in the football club. We have got the club on a very sound financial footing, so we are able to spend and punch above our weight thanks to the current financial situation the club finds itself in. We may have the cart, financially, but we now need to bolt the horse on, and we are going to." In admitting the blame for Newcastle's disappointing campaign last season lay at his feet and his feet only, chairman Mike Ashley promised to invest. The Toon Army was collectively stunned. Rightly so, of course. Since Ashley added Newcastle to his business empire, 'investment' has hardly been the buzzword. £149.6million has been spent on players over the last eight seasons at St James' Park, while £169.75m has been recouped in player sales. The net spend of -£20.15m is ludicrous for a club of such ambitions. In truth, it's quite ludicrous for a Premier League club full stop. Of the 20 clubs currently residing in England's top tier, only recently promoted Watford boast a more profitable net spend over the past eight seasons (-£21.7m). Bournemouth (+£3m) and Norwich (+£35.27m) eclipse them over a similar timeframe, while, of the relatively established clubs, only Swansea (+£11.54m) and Southampton (+£21.62m) come close. Seeing their bitter rivals Sunderland struggle despite an expenditure of £102.13m since 2007 will provide little consolation. It does however prove that it's not only investment that has been lacking from Ashley, but investment in the right places. Spending money is all well and good, but it needs to be spent wisely. Which is where the recent acquisition of PSV captain Georginio Wijnaldum comes in. Not since Michael Owen in 2005 have the Toon spent so much on one player. The Dutchman ranks third behind Alan Shearer in Newcastle's all-time most expensive signings.

Stephan El Shaarawy joins Monaco from AC Milan on season-long loan

Monaco have confirmed that they have signed striker Stephan El Shaarawy on a season-long loan from AC Milan. El Shaarawy found the net just three times in 19 games for Milan in an injury-disrupted 2014-15 season and was likely to find his first-team chances limited further following the arrival of Carlos Bacca from Sevilla earlier this month. Monaco have the option of buying El Shaarawy at the conclusion of his loan deal and the 22-year-old Italy international will join up with his new team-mates on their pre-season training excursion to St Vincent.Leonardo Jardim's side secured a third-placed Ligue 1 finish to qualify for this season's Champions League, but struggled for goals at times last campaign and El Shaarawy is keen to repay the faith shown in him by the principality club's hierarchy. "It's a great feeling to sign here in Monaco. I am very happy and very moved," he told his new club's website. "I thank the president of Monaco for this opportunity. I hope to have a great season with Monaco and give pleasure to the fans." Monaco vice-president Vadim Vasilyev added: "We are very proud to welcome Stephan El Shaarawy, whose arrival marks a highlight of our recruitment strategy. "Stephan El Shaarawy has experience of several seasons at the highest level and also represents the future."

Yohan Cabaye joins Crystal Palace from Paris Saint-German

Crystal Palace have announced the signing of midfielder Yohan Cabaye on a three-year contract for an undisclosed fee. The deal has been described by Palace as club record fee and it is believed to be £10m, rising to £13m with add-ons. France international Cabaye's move reunites him with manager Alan Pardew, who he played under previously at Newcastle. Although the 29-year-old made 33 appearances for the French side last season, he wasn’t always in the first XI and he began just two of the five Champions League games he played. Cabaye passed a medical on Thursday and returns to English football after spending two and a half years at St James’ Park between 2011 and 2014. He said: “I’m happy to be here. I’ve been waiting for the decision, had the medical and now I can’t wait to focus on my new team, a new season and my new life. “I wanted to come and play for Palace because there are some really strong players here. They finished very well last season and I think they can compete to get into the top eight. "I also know the gaffer and have worked with him before and I’m confident with him. I want to do my best for him because he’s made a big effort to get me to come here, as well as the Chairman, so I have to say a big thank you to both of them.”

Danny Wilson could captain Rangers one day, says assistant manager David Weir

Rangers assistant manager David Weir has described Danny Wilson as a future captain. Wilson, who started his career at Ibrox in 2008, was the Hearts skipper last term as he led them to the Scottish Championship title He ended his stay at Tynecastle when his contract expired last month and has signed a three-year contract with Rangers. The 45-year-old, who played alongside Wilson when the centre-back first broke into the Ibrox team as a teenager, told RangersTV: "I think you forget how young he was when he was playing here the first time and obviously he's gone down south and had various clubs there. "He played for Liverpool and he was out on loan at Bristol (City) and a couple of other places. So he's learned a lot and he's matured a lot. "Meeting him in the last few days again you can see he's grown up and he's developed physically and mentally so he's a different lad to what he was, although he's still got a lot of the same characteristics. He's a nice person, which helps as well. "As I said he does tick a lot of the boxes and that being another one as well, the fact he is vocal, he is a leader and he's a potential captain. "He's one of those types that are few and far between so that's another added bonus with getting Danny here. "He's got the attributes to come in and be the right type of person, set the tone for everyone else and be a part of what we want to do here."

No Hate, Just Indifference Towards WWC In case we didn't already know, the Mailbox suggests the Women's World Cup isn't

But the thing is, I just don't care. As I say, I support Aston Villa, and if taking part in football as a spectator were based solely on logic, there is no way on God's green f***ing earth I'd spend my time and money watching that shower on a regular basis. But unfortunately, at some point in my life, my brain decided I was going to care, and care deeply, about whether or not a group of millionaires playing in claret and blue shirts in north Birmingham on a Saturday afternoon win a game invented by children. Hey ho. See also: England [m]. This has never happened with women's football. I'd never even seen a game played by women until I was about 20, and while I can appreciate it as a sport, I just don't give a monkey's about what happens; similar to when I'm watching golf, tennis, boxing, WWE, bowls, any sport I didn't take an interest in as a kid really. And so the WWC is passing me by. Is this because I'm a misogynist? Am I a prat, as Nick Miller suggests? I don't think so. Don't get me wrong, normally I'd eat my own fingers before being on the same side of a debate as Martin Samuel, Rod Liddle, etc. But I dislike the implication that if I don't make myself watch something I'm not interested in, this means there's something wrong with me. Neil Raines Bit of a sweeping generalisation on your website to say that anyone who hates the Women's World Cup must be "a prat". It's football on the same level as Scottish football, which everyone also hates. Are they prats? No, they are people who watch great football all year round and then are expected to like this dross, or they must be a prat. I'd rather go out in the sun than stay in and be served this slice of shite. I remember when the world wasn't full of social justice warriors and actually just reasonable people. Your own website even said once that there are "people waiting on the internet to be angered by anything". Which is what you're doing here so well done.

Football People on TV: Matt Smith

John Nicholson and Alan Tyers wipe away their tears, wave goodbye to ITV's coverage of football as the tactics truck of destiny is finally crushed in the knacker's yard of existence. But I tell you what, Clive, they'll really miss that Matt Smith. Fashion Police Soft tailoring from the 'a touch more sensitive' range. Nicer than Blue Harbour but not overly concerned with fashionability and nor an expression of brutal masculinity. Doesn't favour the standard presenter's undertaker look of black jacket and tie, white shirt. Never afraid to sport pink or a strong mid blue. We sense he'd be very at home in a cashmere roll-neck in a mid grey. Does not own slacks. Has lovely eyes and a habit of raising an eyebrow which suggests hotter fires burn under his cool exterior. Wears one of those unremarkable hair cuts that nonetheless looks expensive and is certainly not done in the kitchen by their missus, which is our favoured tonsorial option. Now into his 40s, a greying barnet has only increased his charm. Lingo Bingo A native of Liverpool, although you'd never really know. His vaguely north-west accent is just enough to give him a bit of character but not powerful enough to brand him as a Designated Northerner. Specialises in relaxed, somewhat amused presentation. Seems almost totally unfazed by the gig and has developed chattiness as his go-to mode of communication. Hits & Misses His biggest miss was that being, for a while and in our view criminally, the fourth choice behind Adrian Chiles, Gabby Logan and, even more amazingly, Jim Rosenthal. As one by one, those people left, he must have felt that his big gig was coming, only to then be usurped by Mark Pougatch. A perfectly decent cove, the Pougers, but what's wrong with Matt? For years he's been ITV hidden gem, tucked away on ITV94 covering Europa League games from Albania (which is, of course, why we love him) His biggest achievement is to be a really professional presenter but without it seeming like a torture or encouraging an overbearing personality. Whilst Adrian would struggle with the talking up to the break bits, Matt always does that like a pro. He must have looked upon his competitors and wondered why they were above him when, to be frank, he had much better chops. Such is life. The bestselling records are often not the best music. Big Club Bias Although a Liverpool fan, it never came through. Years of Europa League work at the dusty end of the dial sandwiched between repeats of early 90s Poirot and documentaries about drunk people from Barnsley on holiday in Ibiza knock the ego and elitist-fuelled grandiosity of the big club bias out of a man. When you've covered Stoke City on a wet Thursday night, it's a sobering reminder of the mortality of all flesh and that the Big Time ain't so big after all. Loved Or Loathed We would speculate that anyone loathing Matt Smith has no joy for existence. If we may use a poetry analogy, he's more Roger McGough than Allen Ginsberg, but then we don't always want to see an angel-headed hipster presenting obscure European games. There's a homespun plainness to Matt that gives us a sense of fuzzy warm calm that not even having Gus Poyet as a pundit can disturb. Proper Football Man Well he's presenting on ITV, which is the sort of thing a PFM would do, whilst gently simmering that perfumed brown-nosers were getting all the good gigs. But we don't think Matt is a PFM at all despite mixing with those who clearly are. He's the sort of chap who has to encourage and indulge the PFM in banter antics, but will never be found inside a skip of waste food with grotesquely stained trousers around the back of a Kentucky Fried Chicken shop in Urlam after one too many pink paraffin and boot polish liveners with Reidy and the boys. Equally, we doubt he will ever be snapped with Miss Ramsbottom 1986 coming out of a lap dancing club called Beavers. He's just too respectable and nice for that. Also he's a Modern Languages and Political Studies graduate, which is just far too much education to even get you a day pass to PFM land. The real PFMs know he's not one of their own. Maybe this explains why he's always fallen short of a big promotion over the years.

Brown defends Messi selfie

Messi is used to being sought after by fans, celebrities and even fellow professionals but he was still caught by surprise when Brown asked for a selfie following Argentina's 1-0 Copa America win. Argentina won Group B with Saturday's victory, their second at the tournament in Chile, and were waiting on Sunday to find out who they would face in the last eight after the final round of Group C matches. Striker Brown, who had been substituted near the end of the match at Vina del Mar, picked up his mobile phone as soon as the final whistle went and ran onto the pitch to find Messi. "I had thought about it before the match so that's why I took (the phone) to the bench. As soon as (the match) finished, I took the picture," Brown said. "Messi is the best in the world, a star, and that's a photo I'll have as a souvenir all my life." Argentina's captain laughed as he recalled what had happened. "He surprised me. On top of that I was annoyed about how the match had gone despite our win ... but when I saw the phone I realised what was going on. It's really nice when a colleague asks me for that," Messi said. Argentina were all over Jamaica in the first half and should have had more than Gonzalo Higuain's early goal. They hit the bar twice before losing the initiative alarmingly in the final quarter of the match. They managed to defend their lead and avoid what happened in their opening match when they gave away a two-goal lead to Paraguay who scored twice in the last half hour for a 2-2 draw. "In the first half we created lots of chances, we found the spaces but couldn't score another goal," said Messi, who was making his 100th appearance for Argentina. "It got tougher for us in the second half, the rhythm dropped and we played much more slowly, that's a fact... I don't know if it's a physical issue, I don't know why it happened to us." Messi said Argentina would have to improve for the knockout phase if they want to win their first major title since the 1993 Copa America in Ecuador. "That was our objective, to finish first (in the group) and think about what's to come. Another Copa starts now," Messi added.
